Last Thursday, 8 December, the facade and cupola of St. Peter’s Basilica, normally a brightly lit beacon in the capital’s sky, went dark for a few hours.
This had happen on Empire State Building and United Nations Building in New York, in August 2015.

The power cut was actually part of a technical dress rehearsal for “Fiat Lux: Illuminating Our Common Home,” a gift from a coalition and a public art projection on the facade of St. Peter’s timed to coincide with the climate talks in Paris. It is also part of the inauguration of the Roman Catholic Church’s yearlong Jubilee of Mercy, which starts Dec. 8 2015.

The Vatican has thrown its weight behind an environmental cause, to coincide with the final days of the climate negotiations in Paris.
It allowed St. Peter's Basilica to be turned into a huge backdrop for an art show about nature, with images of various animals being projected on to the building.
Pope Francis has been a strong supporter of environmental causes and has previously criticised economies which rely on fossil-fuel, saying that they destroy the planet. Read here
