Dia Internacional da Biodiversidade
A 22 de Maio comemora-se o Dia Internacional da Biodiversidade, proclamado pelas Nações Unidas (UN) com o objectivo de aumentar o grau de consciencialização e conhecimentos acerca da biodiversidade.
O tema de 2016 é "Integração da Biodiversidade para Apoio às Populações e aos seus Meios de Subsistência".
Inicialmente, esta efeméride era comemorada a 29 Dezembro (data da entrada em vigor da Convenção da Diversidade Biológica). Porém, em Dezembro de 2000, a Assembleia Geral das NU adoptou 22 de Maio como Dia Internacional da Biodiversidade, para comemorar a adopção do texto da Convenção a 22 de Maio de 1992 pelo “Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity”.
Tal deve-se, em parte, à dificuldade que muitos países sentiam em conseguirem organizar as comemorações a 29 de Dezembro, época coincidente com outras celebrações (festas de Natal e Ano Novo).
A Biodiversidade é uma das propriedades fundamentais da natureza, responsável pelo equilíbrio e estabilidade dos ecossistemas.
“Vivemos hoje uma época crítica, em que a perda de biodiversidade ao nível global atingiu valores sem precedentes”,
Segundo a Quercus, “a biodiversidade é um bem precioso para o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas naturais e reveste-se de grande importância económica para a humanidade, particularmente ao nível das exigentes necessidades na produção alimentar e no controlo e tratamento de doenças”.
“A problemática das alterações climáticas tem como tema central o aquecimento global, que tem como consequências imediatas o aumento do nível do mar, o desaparecimento de algumas zonas húmidas, a redução dos níveis de humidade atmosférica e o aumento da desertificação, sobretudo em países mais suscptíveis a estes fenómenos, como é o caso de Portugal”.
Hoje, dia 23 Maio há um "Encontro com a Biodiversidade" no Auditório da Sede da Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo, Alcochete.

The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity.
In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as International Day for Biological Diversity, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.

This year’s theme: "Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods."
It reflects the importance of efforts made at all levels to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development.

Deforestation is a global issue affecting all of us. It is important to inform people about this issue so that people can understand seriousness of the problem.

Livestock biodiversity must be preserved as tool against climate change
Biodiversity is the foundation for life and for the essential services provided by ecosystems. It therefore underpins peoples’ livelihoods and sustainable development in all areas of activity, including economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, among others. By halting biodiversity loss, we are investing in people, their lives and their well-being.
Livestock biodiversity must be preserved as tool against climate change.
UN invite Parties and organizations that have already initiated national plans for activities to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity to keep the Secretariat informed of such plans and other noteworthy activities organized by NGOs or other organizations so that they may be included in UN pages.
